Microsoft has launched its new OS Windows 10, and it gained a lot of attention all over the world. But the question here is should you upgrade to the new OS? If you don’t have an alternate PC to test the new Windows 10 OS, here is a guide to help you test it on a Virtual Machine. In other words find out how to install Windows 10 OS in VMware Workstation.
Note: VMware Workstation is free only for a 30-day trial, and you need to buy a licensed product to continue using it.
What will you need?
- You should have VMware workstation 11 installed in your PC. If you don’t know how to do that, follow our tutorial to Install Typical VMware Workstation In Windows.
- Windows 10 Installation Media (i.e., either an ISO image or a DVD)
If you are unaware of how to download Windows 10 installation media, don’t worry. In my previous post, I have provided the steps to Download Windows 10 ISO file.
Steps To Install Windows 10 OS In VMware:
Step 1: To get started, first open up your VMware Workstation and select “Create New Virtual Machine.”
Step 2: This will now open up the New Virtual Machine Wizard. In the home screen, you will be provided with two types of configuration as “Typical” and “Custom.”
If you wish to create a virtual machine with some advanced options, then you can select “Custom.” But here I am selecting the “Typical” configuration. Once done, click “Next.”
Step 3: In the next screen, you have to specify the path where your Windows 10 ISO image is located. Select the path with “Browse” button and once selected click “Next.”
Now VMware will automatically detect the OS. If not you have to specify it manually in the next screen.
Step 4: Now select the “Guest Operating System” from the list of available Operating System and the “Version” from the drop down and click “Next.”
Note: In “versions” drop down, you have the option of selecting either 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 10. Choose the one as per your needs.
Step 5: The next screen will let you to set a name for your virtual machine and to specify the location where your virtual machine needs to be stored. Here I am selecting the default options. Once selected, click “Next.”
Step 6: The next step is creating a Virtual Hard Disk. Specify the maximum disk size in the space provided. It is advisable to select 60 GB and click “Next.”
Step 7: You can customize the hardware that your virtual machine will use in the next screen. Select “Custom Hardware” to customize it, else just click on “Finish” to start the installation.
Step 8: Now you will be taken back to the VMware Homepage. Click “Power on this virtual machine” to begin the Windows 10 installation.
Step 9: Once you power on the machine, you will be prompted to select the language, time, and input method. Select the necessary details and click “Next.”
Step 10: You will be asked to enter the product key on the next screen. Enter the key if you have already purchased, else click on “I don’t have a product key.”
Step 11: Select the operating system in the next screen, select “I accept the terms” and click “Next.”
Step 12: Choose the type of installation in the next screen, and you will be asked to choose the drive where the Windows need to be installed. Select the drive and click “Next.”
Step 13: The installation will begin now. After successful installation, you will need to restart the Virtual Machine.
That’s it. You have successfully installed the Windows 10 OS on your Virtual Machine now.
