Thought of blocking a website in your windows 7 PC? It is not a rocket science actually and it is a very simple task. Here I will show you the step by step procedure to block a website in windows 7 PC.
It is obvious that sometimes you need to block a website for family safety. Don’t worry. You can block a website by editing your Host file. But before making any changes to your host’s file, make sure that you have backed up the original host’s file. This is necessary because if anything goes wrong you can use the backup to restore the host file.
After taking the backup follow the procedure given below to block a website in your windows computer.
Steps To Block A Website In Windows 7:
Note: This tutorial will work on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
Step 1: Tto get started you need to locate your host’s file. To locate the hosts file go to C: -> Windows -> System32 -> Drivers -> etc.
Step 2: Here you will find a list of files, locate hosts file and right-click on it to see the list of options available.

Step 3: Now in the open with window select “Notepad” and click “OK“.
Step 4: This will open up the host’s file in Notepad and you will be able to edit it.
Step 5: Inside the host’s file, locate 127.0.0.1 localhost and place your cursor at the end of the line and enter a new line. In the new line enter the URL of the website that needs to be blocked. Prepend the URL with IP address “127.0.0.1” and a single blank space. Make sure that you enter the URL without https://.
You can enter as many URLs as you want but you need to enter each URLs on a new line.
Step 6: Once done, click File -> Save to save the hosts file. This will prompt you for the admin credentials.
Now to save the file with admin credentials follow the below steps:
- Right click on the host’s file and select “Properties” from the list.
- Under “Security” Tab select the group “Users” from group or user name and under “Permissions” check allow for full control.
- Click “Apply” and click “OK“.
Step 7: Now go back to the host’s file and save the file before exiting.
That’s it. You have blocked the website. To confirm, enter the URL in the browser and hit enter. Now the browser will display the error message. By using this method you can block as many websites as you wish.
