Are you searching for a secure way to save your account passwords? Well, you can save all of your passwords using a third party software KeePass. Haven’t heard about it? Not sure how to use it? Don’t worry. In this post, I have explained how you can save passwords using KeePass.
What is KeePass?
KeePass is a freemium password safe application for Windows, which can be used to save all of your passwords. It has an easy to use interface, which makes it the best password manager for windows.
The major advantage of using this password safe is that all the passwords you entered in this password manager are stored in a highly encrypted database, and hence it ensures maximum security for your passwords. Also, KeePass allows you lock its database with a master password or a key file.
Steps To Save Passwords Using KeePass:
Installing The KeePass:
Step 1: To get started, download the KeePass software from the official web page.
Step 2: The setup file will be downloaded in a minute or two. Now double-click on the setup file (.exe file) to start the installation. Click “Run” when prompted.
Step 3: In the license agreement page of the setup window, select “I accept the agreement” and click on “Next” button.
Step 4: Select the destination location using the “Browse” button in the next window and click “Next.”
Step 5: Allow the defaults in the components window and click “Next.”
Step 6: In the next window, select the checkbox “Create a desktop shortcut” to create a desktop shortcut for KeePass and click “Next.”
Step 7: Now KeePass is almost ready to install. Click “Install” to begin the installation.
Step 8: After successful installation, exit the setup wizard and launch the app.
How To Save Passwords Using KeePass Password Safe:
Step 9: In the KeePass window, click the “New” icon in the taskbar or press Ctrl + N on your keyboard to create a new password database. Name the database as per your wish and save it to your desired location when it is prompted.
Step 10: Now create Composite Master Key window will open up. Enter a master key for your KeePass database and click “ok.”
Note: make sure that the hide password button is enabled to hide the master password behind asterisks symbol.
Step 11: Now from the left pane, you can select the database for saving your passwords. For example, if you wish to save your email password then you can select email from the left pane.
Step 12: Click Add Entry icon in the taskbar to add an entry to the database. In the add entry dialog box fill all the necessary fields and click “Ok.”
By this way, you can add as many entries as you want to the database. By following this method, you can save Windows passwords, web application passwords, etc.
Step 13: To save the database, click File – > Save As and select Save to File. In the save as dialog box enter a name for the database and save it with .kdb extension.
That’s it. You have now successfully saved your passwords. Now if you try to open the saved .kdb file with a notepad, only the encrypted contents will be displayed in the notepad. To access to these passwords, you will need to enter the master password.
